Helly Hansen
From our home in Norway, Helly Hansen has been making professional grade gear to help people stay and feel alive for more than 140 years.
It all started in 1877 when sea captain Helly Juell Hansen found a better way to stay protected from the harsh Norwegian elements. Soon thereafter, Captain Hansen and his wife Margrethe launched a business producing waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, souâwesters and tarpaulins made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil â and the legend was born!
1877: Captain Helly Juell Hansen Launches A Legend
Norwegian captain Helly Juell Hansen wanted to find a better way to protect his sailors from the harsh, Nordic weather. By applying linseed oil to cotton canvas, he created supple, water-proof apparel. Soon after, he and his wife Margarethe started producing âoilskinâ jackets and pants in Moss, Norway. Their waterproof gear was an immediate success, landing our first product award at the World Expo in Paris in 1878.

About Helox
Since 1949, Helox has been an important step in Helly Hansen's rain-wear history. The transition from oil garments to plastic started.
The very successful Helox garments made from PVC were launched, giving Helly Hansen a head start on the competition due to extensive material research abroad. The Norwegian delegation all wore Helox during the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.
Each Helox+ purchase comes with a PU repair kit, enabling you to repair your garment rather than buy a new one.
How to use the PU repair kit
- Cut the patch to the required size
- Set iron to wool setting (148 degrees Celsius)
- Lay the repair patch shiny side down onto the outside of the damaged area
- Lay a dish cloth on top of the patch
- Hold the iron on the dish cloth for 15 seconds
- Remove iron and dish cloth. The patch should have fully adhered to the PU.
- Repeat this process from the inner side to ensure full watertightness
