Product description

Claudio Abbado conducted the Vienna Philharmonic for the first time in 1965. The invitation came from none other than Herbert von Karajan. During his impressive career, Abbado has opened up an enormous repertoire of piano concertos, masses, songs and symphonies by important composers such as Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Schönberg. His role as an opera conductor is particularly noteworthy. Many of his recordings with Deutsche Grammophon, such as Debussy’s “Pelléas et Mélisande”, Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”, Rossini’s “L’italiana in Algeri” or Wagner’s “Lohengrin” are now considered as reference exceptions. “Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon” provides for the first time a comprehensive insight into the performances of Abbado with the Vienna Philharmonic on Deutsche Grammophon, recorded over four decades. “.. Abbado [was] at the conductor of the Vienna Edel-Orchester on a total of 500 evenings between 1965 and 1997. This includes 27 opera productions, some of which luckily made it onto sound recordings. Like Alban Berg’s “Wozzeck” with Franz Grundheber in the title role, Modest Mussorgsky’s’ Chowanschina ‘or ‘Figaro’s Wedd’ by Mozart with Bo Skovhus, Cheryl Studer and the young Cecilia Bartoli. These and four other operas are impressive testimonies by the music theatre man Abbado. .. Among them are the complete Beethoven Symphony cycle, selected symphonies by Bruckner and Mahler, as well as Verdi’s’ Requiem ‘alongside solo concerts with Nathan Milstein, Maurizio Pollini and Friedrich ‘Mozart Wonder’ Gulda as absolute highlights. And last but not least, Arnold Schönberg’s ‘survivors from Warsaw’ get under the skin. Guido Fischer – Rondo 1/2020
