General information on measuring loudness: The volume

is measured using the sound pressure level, which is expressed in decibels (dB). These air pressure vibrations hit our eardrums and are thus sent to our brain, where they are therefore transformed into information. How loud or quiet a sound is therefore depends on the energy of its vibrations (sound). Volumes around 50 decibels are most comfortable, whereas sounds above around 100 decibels are described as unpleasant. However, sound perception differs from person to person, as it depends on the respective hearing ability.

In general, an increase of 10 decibels is a doubling of the volume. For example, a breathing noise of around 20 decibels, birdsong around 50 decibels and a circular saw already has 100 decibels.
