The war marine had to be practically rebuilt after the First World War. Germany was forbidden to own large ships and subboats, and it first nibbled one clause of the Versailler contract, then another until a powerful sea force existed. At the outbreak of the Second World War, relatively few large ships were put on service and no aircraft carriers. There has never been an outlook of a UK match with regard to the number of large ships, but the qualitative advantage of the proposed superbattle ships could have made a significant difference.
